Summer Skating

All club levels, including intro, are encouraged to take group lessons in the summer. Skaters get a report card at the end of the summer that indicates the suitable group for them in the next season.

Changes this summer:

  1. Group instruction will change to 20 minutes instead of 30 minutes. Tuition cost has been adjusted to reflect this decrease. Coaches would like to see if this allows for more focused classes and see if this works better overall prior to making plans for the fall season.
  2. Summer Sessions will not automatically include off-ice classes. Instead, those will be a separate optional class. Coaches firmly believe that off-ice training as important to the growth of the skaters but only when they are truly commited to that growth. This allows the kids in these optional classes to have less distractions and also allows families to choose if this is something they want to use their resources towards.

Ages

Skater must be 5 years old or older.

All skaters new to Intro to Figure Skating need to have passed the City of Steamboat Springs Learn to Skate Program or an equivalent Learn to Skate Basic 3 Program prior to enrolling. Those who enroll without passing a Basic 3 program will be re-directed to the Steamboat Springs Learn to Skate Program.

When

Our 2025 Summer classes run from June 17th through August 17th.

There are no classes on July 1st, July 3rd, July 17th, or July 20th.

Where

All on-ice classes are at the Howelsen Ice Arena.

Optional off-ice classes for Basic 6-Aspire 3 will be held at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Details for the optional off-ice classes for Aspire 4 and above are still being determined. More information will be sent out as soon as possible.

Practices

The Steamboat Skating Club has ice time on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4-5pm, and on Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm. Group lessons are held the first 20 minutes of each session and are followed by 40 minutes of free skate.

Each level has their own schedule with lower levels training one day per week and higher levels training two days per week. Scroll down to see a detailed schedule for each level.

Dress Code

All skaters need to wear tight fitting clothing. It is recommended that all skaters wear a jacket and gloves. Hair MUST be pulled back securely away from the face.

No skaters will be allowed on the ice in jeans or shorts.

Extra Costs

All skaters are required to have an active Learn to Skate or USFSA membership. Intro skaters get their Learn to Skate membership included in their monthly costs. All other skaters will be charged a USFSA membership fee upon registration after July 1st each year.

First year USFSA memberships are discounted.

Individual Group Schedule

Accelerated Skating School

Looking for more ice time for your skater? Here it is!!!

The Steamboat Skating Club is offering the Accelerated Skating School again this summer. This program is available for Aspire 1 skaters and above and is designed to give skaters 2 additional days to train both on and off the ice. This year we will be dividing skaters by level for half the time and combining them for the other half. This will allow for more specialized training while still fostering relationships and teamwork among all of the skaters involved. The schedule is as follows:

Mondays

1:30-2:15 Aspire 4 and above Off-Ice Training

2:30-3:15pm Aspire 4 and above On-Ice

3:15-4:00pm Aspire 1-3 On-Ice

4:15-5:00pm Aspire 1-3 Off-Ice Training

Wednesdays

3:00-3:45pm All Levels Off-Ice Training

4:00-5:00pm All Levels On-Ice

This program requires at least 8 skaters (per group) to sign up before summer skating begins. It is an extra program that is only available to skaters who have enrolled in regular summer session skating (not punch card).
